Mike Ross, DPT

Physical Therapist

How do you stay updated with the latest techniques and advancements in physical therapy? I was inspired to pursue a career in physical therapy to help others who are hurting or struggling, as well as through my own experiences from being injured and undergoing physical therapy. Through my own sports injuries and surgeries, I quickly learned how big of an impact physical therapy can have in allowing a person to take back their life. After graduating with my bachelor’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh, I began working towards earning my Doctor of Physical Therapy from Chatham University.

Since graduating in 2022, I have come to specialize in treating orthopedics injuries, including sports injuries, post-operative care, and much more. I also have extensive experience in treating vestibular and balance issues, including different types of vertigo. Additionally, I have a certification in SFMA Levels I & II.

What do you find most rewarding about working in physical therapy?
My philosophy is that someone can always improve the situation they find themself in, no matter how difficult it may seem. With the right treatment, in combination with the right perspective and outlook, there is only potential for growth and improvement in one’s life. I customize all treatment plans to be specifically tailored to each individual patient based on their needs and goals. To me, the most rewarding part of working in physical therapy is connecting with my patients. I always strive to create strong and trusting relationships with all of those in my care. There is nothing more satisfying than getting to know an individual, watching them achieve their goals, and providing support to them every step of the way.

In your opinion, what is the key to a successful patient-therapist relationship?
The key is to have a strong and trusting relationship with one another. As I work with my patients, I not only learn what their injuries and goals are, but I also have the privilege of getting to know them as people. This includes their lives outside of physical therapy. Becoming more familiar with patients as people, or “their true selves,” gives me better insight and motivation into how to help them overcome the problems in front of them. Through this, I get to watch them live their lives to the fullest, unhindered by injury and limitation.

By creating this level of connection and trust, the capacity for what the patient
and I can achieve together increases substantially. I always tell my patients, “you are in the driver’s seat, and I am just in the passenger seat giving you directions on where to go.” When working together in this way throughout the journey, we will reach their ultimate destination.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work to maintain your own physical and mental well-being?
Outside of work, I have many hobbies and interests. Most of all, I love spending time with my wife and traveling with her to new places near and far throughout the year. When the weather is nice, I also love spending time outside hiking, walking or riding my bike on the trail, and kayaking occasionally. I am a huge fan of watching a variety of different movies and TV shows and could talk about my favorites for hours! I also enjoy reading a good book when I have the time.

What advice would you give to someone considering physical therapy as a solution to their health concerns?
Everyone is the author of their own story and has the power to create positive change in their own lives. The first step is taking the initiative to improve your current situation and receiving the right help and guidance along the way. Physical therapy has reliably proven to be an effective means of improving injuries and other health conditions. Don’t waste another second accepting a circumstance that you are not happy with.
